Photo The Museum in Pieces: A Study of Lesser-Known Things

Instructor: Jennifer Katanic 4 s; 5/10, 5/17, 5/24, 5/31 This course has multiple sessions. Register here beginning March 21. The subject of our inquiry is the museum itself. What exactly is a museum? How do we come to know it? This class will focus on using the unfamiliar as a tool for rediscovery, with the goal of thinking differently about museums by shifting our perceptions of ourselves within it. We begin in the collections galleries, with a close look at the Cubism of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque and the simultaneity of Robert and Sonia Delaunay, which become our models for engaging the traditional space of the museum in more conceptual terms. This class is an homage to the visionary artists who dared to see world's fragmented, elusive beauty (Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, and Piet Mondrian), and those whose processes reflected this world to us materially (Robert Rauschenberg, Yves Klein, and Magdalena Abakanowicz).

Photo Design at MoMA: The Young Architects Program, with Sean Anderson

In 1999, MoMA and MoMA PS1 started the Young Architects Program (YAP), a competition offering emerging architectural talent the opportunity to design and present an innovative, temporary installation for the courtyard of MoMA PS1. Now in its 18th year, YAP is considered the preeminent forum for engagement with contemporary architecture. Sean Anderson, Associate Curator in MoMA’s Department of Architecture and Design, will discuss the direction of this year’s YAP, along with broader ideas about architecture . Bloomberg Philanthropies has supported the Young Architects Program since 2007. In 2016, MoMA PS1 and The Museum of Modern Art were thrilled to announce that this lead sponsorship had been extended for 3 years, enabling the Young Architects Program to thrive and excite audiences through summer 2018. Additional funding for the 2017 Young Architects Program is provided by Bertha and Isaac Liberman Foundation, Jeffrey and Michèle Klein, and Agnes Gund.
